Tobacco is considered a sacred plant by many Native Americans. It is used in ceremonies, rituals, non-smoke offerings and gifts. When used in a spiritual way, it is said that the rising puffs of smoke carry one’s words or prayers upwards to the Creator. Tobacco is used as a non-smoke offering (a thank you) when foraging or gathering items from the earth. Growing up my grandfather would gift tobacco to someone who had helped him with a task, like moving cattle.
